8-track cassettes became popular in the second half of the 1960s, because of their use in car radios and radio studios. But when better quality Compact Cassettes occurred, record companies ignored the 8-track pretty soon.
8 audio tracks
These plastic cassettes are also known as Stereo8, 8-track cartridge or 8-trace cassettes. They derive their name from the eight audio tracks on the magnetic tape, with which you could capture four parallel stereo recordings.
